Puppies Get Diarreah
Any idea why puppies get diarreah? The vet says there is nothing wrong with them, but this happens every time when they start eating kibble. I'm assuming it's just too much for their little systems. I try a different food with each litter, but it still happens. They eventually grow out of it, but it's frustrating. We have tried Blue Buffalo, Nutro Max, Nutro Natural Choice for Sensitive Stomachs, Nutro Ultra, Canidae, EVO, Artemis, Puppy Chow, Wild Something, ect. I have a load of Royal Canin coming, so we'll be trying that next. I have fed all the above foods, to include Royal Canin to my adult Huskies and they do fine. Would canned food be better for the pups? I would cook a natural diet for them, but everything in the dog foods are already scientifically balanced. If that would help though, I would do the research.

Re: Puppies Get Diarreah
Good Question. I have had the same problemss and even at 5-6 weeks of age. I ahve also used many of the same foods and had the same results. I have noticed this time that they are growing out of it now at about 6 1/2 weeks. I have also added a bit of canned pumpkin (just the pure pumpkin...not the pie filling) which helps quite a bit with this issue. Best of luck to you! Maggie

i have had that problem too, a lot of times we feed too much and that causes diarhea. i cut back a little on thier food and it worked. if they eat too fast that will cause it too.

Re: Puppies Get Diarreah
My pup had it at 7 weeks old. The breeder and their vet made their own food, so I knew he was going to have diarreah for a while. But royal canin was a good fit. I found with my dog that if you feed them dry kibble hard stools would form but any moist or wet foods he will have diarreah.

Re: Puppies Get Diarreah
I wean all my pups with pumpkin as a part of the puppy mush. Pumkin and Baby food with goat's milk powere mixed to the addition of the softened mushed kibble and extract the baby food eventually thining out the goat's milk to water and the pumpkin decreases as time goes on. By the time they leave me its kibble with a little water. Canned pumpkin is the way I go with every litter. If they have loose stools it firms them up and if they are constipated it helps them go! Re: Puppies Get Diarreah
I don't understand why your vet is saying that it's normal for a pup to have diarreah. I have 4 German Shepherds and 1 that we lost 1-1/2 years ago. When they were small they had slightly loose stools but rarely diarreah and not usually for more then a day.
We started feeding our dogs Royal Canin a few years back. I had only two adult dogs at the time and so when we got our first two breeding pups a year and a half ago, it was only natural that they grow up eating the same. What impressed me most about Royal Canin and why I made the switch is because they did the homework that the other brands didn't. Shepherds as well as other breeds have specific nutritional needs to ensure that their health is optimal for a good long time.
I think that you'll have the same experience as me. Try to buy the breed specific brand. Cross over from the brand you are currently using slowly by mixing in Royal Canin. A fast switch between any brands is not good for the dogs digestive system, thus, diarreah. Follow the nutritional guideline chart that is available on this site and if you have any questions at all, send an e-mail to Royal Canin and they respond ever so quickly just reinforcing their love and care of animals.
Hope this helps!

Re: Puppies Get Diarreah
I will have to try the pumpkin someday. I hear from so many that it works.
but, I thought for sure it would make it worse, as it is an unnatural thing for dogs to eat.
thanks.
I would say after raising several shepherds. I would say they do require attention to what foods don't upset their tummies.
And I can say I have tried almost all the old brand names and alot of the newer names now.
I will have to conclude that over many years of trying brand foods out there. I have had good luck with Royal canin 24 for adults and for pups it is still a toss of the coin.
I say that because I never really had great luck.
Another food for the dog I have now would be mixing in Barking at the Moon by Solid gold, she is so hyper and working alot that she needs extra cals to produce a good maintaince of weight. She burns alot of cals and can loose too much. So, BATM, has really improved her weight, muscles along with the RC and didn't give her any notable dirreahea, so that would be a great combo to try.
I feel the gsd does have some sensitive tummies.
I think alot of the club members I meet seem to really have great success with raw diets as well.
I would like to experiment with that next.
good luck everyone:)

Re: Puppies Get Diarreah
I use Royal Canin kibble almost exclusively, and I found that we get more loose/liquid stools with puppy kibble than with adult kibble. We've had the puppies tested for ringworm, giardia, and other parasites, and all show up negative. Deworming also doesn't seem to firm up the stools. I like the added nutritional value and easy digestibility of puppy food, so I have to deal with the stools. Two ideas:
- I mix 1 part adult kibble to 2 parts puppy kibble, and it seems to keep the stools firm.
- As a short-term solution, a pinch of Tylan (tylosin) will firm up stools in just hours.
Hope that helps.

Re: Puppies Get Diarreah
For me, we have always used the Royal Canin Puppy 33. NO table scraps of any kind, and lots of purified water. My little gal rarely gets diarrhea, but if she does, then I lay off the food for about 4-6 hours, and give her plenty of water. She travels with me all the time, so she is used to holding off food/water six hours before the flight.
I hope this helps you!

Re: Puppies Get Diarreah
Hello! I work in a veterinary clinic and we see puppies with diarrhea quite often. I don't think it is normal for puppies to have diarrhea that often. From what it sounds like, you have switched the puppies food several times. How long have you tried sticking with one particular food for?
Constant and/or sudden food changes can very easily cause GI upset and diarrhea. I highly recommend once you receive the royal canin food you said you had coming, to really truly stick with that food for at least 3 months. It typically takes that long for their bodies to become adjusted to a new food. Also, if the diarrhea really doesnt resolve, I suggest visiting a different Veterinarian. They may have internal parasites that need to be treated as well. Hope that helps!
